Postdoctoral Scientist - Rosenthal Lab

The Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL) is dedicated to scientific discovery – exploring fundamental biology, understanding biodiversity and the environment, and informing the human condition through research and education. Founded in Woods Hole, Massachusetts in 1888, the MBL is a private, nonprofit institution and an affiliate of the University of Chicago.

Department Bell Center
Position Type: Research
Position Title: Postdoctoral Scientist - Rosenthal Lab
Position Summary:

A position for a postdoctoral fellow is available in the Rosenthal laboratory of the Bell Center. Recent work by the Rosenthal lab in collaboration with Dr. Eli Eisenberg of Tel Aviv University has shown that cephalopods recode genetic information through RNA editing at unprecedented rates. For squid, octopus and cuttlefish, the majority of messages in the nervous system contain at least one recoding event, a proportion that is orders of magnitude higher than for any other organism studied to date. We hypothesize that the large number of RNA editing-induced mutations has provided strong selective pressure for cephalopods to evolve novel and efficient systems for protein folding and quality control. This could be particularly relevant for neurodegenerative disorders, such as Alzheimer’s disease, that are thought to arise because of deficits in protein folding. This postdoc will conduct research to 1) better understand the mechanistic underpinnings of high-level RNA editing in cephalopods and 2) examine how cephalopod protein folding and quality control systems have adapted to accommodate the extraordinary mutational load imposed by high-level RNA editing. Research will combine cell biology, molecular biology, bioinformatics, RNA-seq, immunohistochemistry, mass spectrometry, laser capture microdissection and confocal microscopy. Opportunities will also be available to participate in the development of genetically tractable cephalopod models. We are searching for an applicant with strong skills in cell and molecular biology.

Additional Information:

The postdoc will be expected to carry out experiments on cephalopod RNA editing, and to develop genetically appropriate cephalopod strains. Results will be presented within the MBL and at national and international meetings. It is expected that high quality publications will result from this work.
The candidate will interact closely with: (i) the PI and his research group; (ii) the summer neurobiology community at MBL; (iii) the staff at the Marine Resource Center and (iv) collaborators at Tel Aviv University and Bar Ilan University.

This position is for three years.

Basic Qualifications:

A PhD degree (or equivalent) in biological sciences or a closely related field. Previous experience in molecular and cell biology is necessary. Knowledge of light and confocal microscopy (light and confocal microscopy) and are also desirable components of a successful candidate’s skill set. Those with experience in bioinformatics, RNA biochemistry, neurodegenerative disease research and/or the use of CRISPR/Cas9 for genome editing with novel models are encouraged to apply.
