Position Title: Research Assistant - Özpolat Laboratory
Position Summary:

The Eugene Bell Center seeks a highly motivated individual to join the laboratory of Dr. Duygu Özpolat as a full-time Research Assistant (I, II, or III). The successful candidate will perform his/her independent project under the PI’s supervision, assist the PI with experiments and with performing general lab maintenance tasks. Özpolat Lab studies regeneration in marine organisms such as bristle worms, sea urchins, and sea stars. Successful candidate will have the opportunity to contribute to scientific publications as an author, and to be trained in some of the current best practices such as genome-editing using CRISPR/Cas9, microinjections, and live-imaging. These will provide the applicant with solid research accomplishments; an excellent opportunity for those planning to apply for graduate school or medical school.

Additional Information:

Responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to, assisting the PI with experiments including molecular biology techniques (such as PCR, cloning, etc), microinjections for genome-editing, live-imaging, immunohistochemistry, data analysis, animal care, lab maintenance and organization, purchasing, and administrative tasks. The projects may require occassional working on the weekends, and weekday evenings for animal care and live-imaging. Position is available immediately, and has funding for 2 years, with a possibility of extension further.

Basic Qualifications:

Applicants must have a B.A./B.S. in biology or a related field. Should be very well-organized, attentive to detail, self-motivated, enthusiastic to learn new techniques, and able to work independently. Position level and salary will depend on education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have a M.A./M.S. in cell and molecular biology, developmental biology, or a related field and one or more years of experience working in a research laboratory. For those candidates with B.A./B.S. degree only, undergraduate research experience is satisfactory. Preference is for those having familiarity with standard laboratory practices and equipment. An understanding of basic molecular biology concepts is important. Previous experience in PCR, gene cloning, DNA and RNA extraction, plasmid preparation, microscopy, marine animal husbandary is preferred. The PI will provide the successful candidate with other necessary advanced trainings (such as microinjections, microsurgeries, and microscopy imaging).

Physical Requirements:

Occasional lifting of heavy objects (<30 pounds).
